Common Mistakes
Humans Make
#1: We fail to understand and recognize normal dog behavior.
Most of the behaviors that we humans find unacceptable, digging, barking, jumping up, etc are normal dog behaviors. The responsibility is on us, the human partner, to show the dog how to behavior in a manner that is more acceptable.
#2: We assume the dog “knows” what we want. We must go through a systematic process of teaching any given behavior, in all contexts, in order for the dog to understand what we want.
If that process is not completed, it is not fair to assume the dog ‘Knows”.
#3: We are reactive rather than proactive. The old adage “We don’t plan to fail, we fail to plan” is very true in dog training. Set your household, your dog, and yourself up for success by having a game plan for training.
#4: Hope that the dog will outgrow…… The truth is if the dog is engaging in any behavior, be it something you want or not want to continue, he is practicing. Practice makes perfect.
